"What an amazing class! I walked in feeling embarrassed about how I draw in general, and walked out feeling like I can do this. Ben is clearly passionate about this topic and does a phenomenal job."

"Thanks again for running a highly engaging session! I’ve already seen the team begin to apply some of the great techniques you shared."

Head of Product Design, Nine

Boost your confidence in telling customer, product and service stories visually

This fun and highly interactive class will equip you to:

  • Draw whatever objects, figures and scenes you need, with techniques like 'icon-style' drawing, '5Ws' context-setting, and storyboarding.
  • Be more creative, and share more of your ideas more rapidly with your team.
  • Frame problems, insights, systems and solutions visually to inform and persuade stakeholders better.

Accelerate creativity and shared understanding, as a team

We 'read' images much faster than words, so a team that draws together can spot gaps, assumptions and misunderstandings faster. Drawing is also the fastest cheapest way to generate more ideas. This class is great for:

  • Designers who want to visualise their ideas more rapidly and fluidly. Software is great, but so many design problems can be solved with pen and paper first!
  • Researchers who want to communicate their research results and insights in much more compelling ways. Harness the power of visual metaphor!
  • Product Managers who want better ways to visualise product and service vision, benefits, audience, strategy and plans. Go beyond the roadmap and user stories!
  • Developers who need to solve technical problems together with user experience (UX) problems, as a team. Drawing gives everybody a common language!
  • Project managers, scrum masters, and agile practitioners, who want to improve their teams’ ways of working. A problem visualised together is a problem halved!

Serious value for visual storytellers

You’re investing in your success as a leader and changemaker. We take that investment seriously, by packing serious value into this class. This class gives you access to:

  • 2 hours of real-time interactive instruction with Ben Crothers, a skilled designer, illustrator and author of Presto Sketching and Draw in 4
  • Your questions answered, throughout the class time
  • Advice on how to improve your drawing in specific ways
  • An ongoing community of chanegmakers and intrapreneurs on the Bright Pilots Slack space

Class outline

We want you to be confident in what you will gain from this class. Here's a detailed look at what you can expect.

1. Introductions and warm-up

Introducing your instructor; fun warm-up sketching activity; class content and outcomes overview.

2. Drawing figures and faces

Sketch along with the instructor, and learn different ways to draw figures and faces, to capture the experience of using a product or service, not just the product or service itself. This also includes drawing a variety of people, to emphasise diversity.

Individual activity: Figures and faces

3. Drawing basic objects and hands

Continue sketching along with the instructor, and learn how to draw just about anything, including hands (gestures and holding things), to build up your visual vocabulary, and draw anything on demand.

Individual activity: Draw a range of basic objects

4. Harnessing visual metaphor

Learn how to communicate problems and benefits with visual metaphor (using a 4-step process), to unlock better insights and solutions.

Individual activity: Draw a user experience problem as a metaphor

5. Bringing your ideas to life with context

Go beyond simple user interface sketches, and learn how to draw your subject / product / service in their natural habitat. This brings context and story to your communications, and makes your ideas much more compelling in design critiques, presentations, design sprints, and workshops.

6. Storyboarding

Learn a simple formula for not only drawing storyboards, but how to frame the experience you're trying to communicate in a really compelling way.

Individual activities: Multiple points of view, and Draw your own storyboard

7. Bringing drawing into your design workflow

A light introduction about ways to incorporate more drawing into the product and service design workflow, to help the whole team explore the problem space better, and then be more creative in the solution space.

8. Wrapping up

Recapping the main points in the class, final Q&A, as well as some next steps and resources.

Impact-driven learning

We’re not flipping burgers here. Leading yourself and others to make a real difference in the world takes more than watching a bunch of online videos. This class is different:

Ben Crothers

Ben has been drawing since he could hold a pen, and drawing as part of work (in research, design, facilitation, strategy and management) for about 25 years.

Ben is currently Principal Facilitator at Bright Pilots, and spends a lot of his time teaching techniques in facilitation, design and illustration, as well as running strategic workshops, and helping teams be more productive and creative.

Previous to Bright Pilots, Ben was Principal Designer at Atlassian, a design consultant at Second Road (a strategic innovation consultancy), and directed several projects to help companies and government departments be more creative in solving complex problems for their customers and communities. A lot of this work involved drawing, such as user interface sketching, storyboarding, concept mapping, product and service illustrations, graphic recording and graphic facilitation.

Above all, Ben wants everyone to be just as good at the whiteboard as they are at the keyboard, to be better at thinking, communicating, and solving problems visually. He has taught drawing for UX Design and sketchnoting regularly at General Assembly, and has packed years of experience, practical tips and exercises in his book Presto Sketching: Simple Drawing for Brilliant Product Thinking and Design.

He enjoys pandemic lockdown-friendly pastimes such as gardening, abstract painting and baking.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a question that isn't answered here? Please send an email or start chatting.

How much does it cost?

This class costs AU$180. We offer discounts for non-profit organisations, and for corporate bookings of over 10 people.

How long is the class?

Each class runs for 2 hours in real-time. The classes take place online and are limited to 10 people per class.

What drawing ability, or materials do I need?

You will need some blank paper (either looseleaf office A4 paper or a sketchbook is fine), a pencil, and a fine black marker of some sort (note: Sharpies are too thick for this drawing). You can use a tablet (e.g. an iPad) if you want to, but marker and paper is completely fine. Even zero drawing ability is totally OK... although you'll be impressed at the drawing ability you already have ;).

What happens after I sign up?

You’ll receive a welcome email and a link to a short questionnaire to help us get to know what you most want to get out of the class. This helps us to  tailor the class to your circumstances and needs as much as we can.

What software do I need to install?

We use the video conferencing platform Zoom. You can use a tablet to draw with if you like (e.g. an iPad and a drawing app like Procreate or Concepts), but a marker and paper is perfectly fine.

Do I need to do any preparation before the course?

The only preparation you need to do is to complete a brief questionnaire sent with your welcome email, as well as thinking about any specific things you would like to learn how to draw.

How interactive is the class?

This class is very interactive; you will be drawing along with the instructor, as well as doing a range of individual activities. You'll probably be prompted to share your drawing at some point during the class, but you don't have to if you don't want to. :) There will also be time for Q&A at the end of the class.

What happens after the class?

You will receive a Certificate of Completion to promote your new credentials. You will also receive links to any resources available, and an invitation to the Bright Pilots Better Meetings Slack community.

You can use this community as a way of keeping in touch with others who attended the class with you, as well as ask questions, give and get advice, and share ideas and resources.

What if I register but can no longer attend?

We understand that sometimes things come up and plans need to change. If you can no longer make it to a class, please email us at least 48 hours prior to the class and we will gladly reschedule your registration for a future date. Cancellations that do not take place prior to the 48 hours will not be eligible for credit.
